Do I need a permit for a block wall in Irvine?

Updated November 2026

For a new block wall, plan on it. As of November 2026, the City of Irvine asks for a building permit application, a dimensioned site plan, construction plans and structural calculations stamped and signed by a California-licensed civil or structural engineer. Applications go through the IrvineReady portal.

What goes in the application?

  • Building permit application and residential take-off sheet
  • Signature disclosure
  • Dimensioned site plan and construction plans
  • Wall calculations stamped by a California civil or structural engineer
  • For a condominium, a copy of the HOA-approved design plans

How long does review take?

The city says staff check completeness in about two business days and that initial plan check takes about five business days. Corrections add time.

Do wood fences need a permit?

A fence within the height limits often does not, but height, setbacks and materials still apply. Pool barriers and powered gates have their own permits.

Questions for the city

The City of Irvine planning division answers zoning questions, and the building division handles the permit itself.
