Do I need HOA approval for a fence in Irvine?

Updated November 2026

If your home is in an association, probably. The City of Irvine says your HOA may have its own approval process and suggests reviewing association policies before finalizing a design. City approval and HOA approval are separate: having one does not give you the other.

What do associations usually review?

  • Style and material
  • Stain or paint color
  • Height and location, especially anything visible from the street
  • Who owns and maintains perimeter fences and walls

What should I submit?

A site sketch with footage and height, product details, color, and photos of the existing fence. We put these together with every Irvine estimate.

Condominiums

For a condominium wall permit, the city asks for a copy of the HOA's approved design plans with the application.
