Up to 7 feet within required setback areas, as of November 2026. In a front setback the limit starts at 2.5 feet at the property line and rises 1 foot for every 3 feet the fence is set back, to a maximum of 7 feet. Anything over 7 feet in a setback needs Administrative Relief from the city.
The key numbers
| Situation | Limit |
|---|---|
| Required setback areas | 7 feet |
| Front setback, at the property line | 2.5 feet above grade |
| Front setback, further back | Plus 1 foot per 3 feet of setback, up to 7 feet |
| Corner lot street side, no driveway on that side | Up to 7 feet |
| Intersection sight triangle | 2.5 feet |
| Over 7 feet in a setback | Administrative Relief |

Which materials are not allowed?
The city lists barbed wire, electrified fences, plain exposed concrete block, plastic, chain link and grape stakes as prohibited. Ask the city how that list applies to your property type before you pick a product.
What about a backyard media or living wall?
In a rear setback it is held to 7 feet as well.
And the HOA?
Your association can be stricter than the city. See HOA approval for fences.
